Skill Development Training Initiatives by the Indian Government

The State Governments, Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) and the Central Government agencies have invested significant amounts of money to provide various Skill Development training for Youths, Teachers, Government Staff, Workers and Tribal people.  The Government engages expert agencies to provide such training. As the public money is being spent, the government is required to engage the training service providers using an open competitive bidding process. As there is a significant demand, a number of skill development agencies are keen to participate in such training opportunities.

Various types of  Skill Development Training is provided at the school level such as the following:

  • Self Defense

  • Sports and Fitness

  • Soft Skills &

  • Communication Skill.

A sector wise analysis of skill development training undertaken by the government agencies in India is given in this section. The Rural Development, Social Welfare and Defense sectors each account for about 13.92% of all the skill development tenders (i.e.) 42% of the training provided followed by Education & Sports (11.39%), Industry (7.59%) and Banking & Finance (6.33%). There were 79 live Skill Development training tenders in India on the 28th of October 2021. Refer below for sector wise detailed percentage breakup:

  • Education and Sports (11.39%)

  • Industry (7.59%) &

  1. Labour Resources Department

  2. Bihar Skill Development Mission (BSDM) 

  3. State Institute for Development Of Arts and Crafts

  5. Educational Consultants India Limited

  6. Labour and Employment Department

  7. Department of Military Affairs

  8. State Skill Development Corporation &

  9. Tribal Area Development Department.



Among the various states in India Maharashtra ranks at the top in providing Skill Development Training, amounting to about 1/5th of all the tenders. Maharashtra is followed by Gujarat (18.99%), Delhi (12.66%) and Rajasthan (6.33%). Refer below for detailed State wise break-up of the Skill Development training:

These products are purchased through a tendering process. Among the various sectors in India, Industry ranks top in purchasing Water Treatment Chemicals, amounting to 20.49% of all the tenders. Industry is followed by Police & Defense (19.02%) and Power (16.59%). This analysis was done based on live tenders published as on November 11, 2021.
